Local events and news

Glasgow West CND meet 7.30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month in 
the Annexe, 9a Stewartville St, Partick.

Glasgow Greenpeace meets at 6.30pm first Tuesday of every month in 
Friends' Meeting House, 38 Elmbank Crescent

Friends of the Earth Glasgow meet on the first Wednesday of the month, at 7.30 
pm, in the West End. For more details, email sara.barry1@ntlworld.com.

Go Bike meetings on the last Wednesday of each month, 7.30pm at the Friends' 
Meeting House. 

The Glasgow Amnesty Daytime group meets on the second Monday of every 
month at 2pm at the Friends Meeting House 38, Elmbank Street, Glasgow.

Scottish Green Party stalls outside the Farmers' Market in Mansfield Park on 
4th Saturdays of every month, and Farmers' Market in Queen's Park 
3rd Saturdays, usually 11am-2pm 

River Kelvin cleanups from 10.30am first Saturday of every month - meet at 
Ha'penny Bridge House (via footsteps in front of Botanic Crescent, off Kelvin 
Drive)

WDM Glasgow meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 6pm. For more details

Towards Transition Glasgow
Towards Transition Glasgow (TTG) is a collective of like minded people, 
communities and groups from across Glasgow and beyond who are preparing 
for a low-carbon future.
This site brings the head, heart and hands of communities together to 
network and share ideas, stories, inspiration, information and much, 
much more as we rebuild community resilience and self-reliance together 
to make the transition to life beyond oil.

The Glasgow Natural History Society exists to encourage the study of natural 
history, principally in the West of Scotland.
We enjoy one of the biggest memberships for a natural history society in 
Scotland. Its monthly meetings and lectures in Glasgow's West End attract 
people from all over Scotland interested in natural history.

Talks on a wide variety of natural history topics are given by invited 
speakers on the second Tuesday of each month (except July, August & 
September).

New Caledonian Woodlands educate people about the important role they need to 
play in a range of environmental issues, from habitat conservation to climate 
change.
Participants on our projects work together in a setting that has benefit in
terms of team development, problem solving and increased well-being.

North Kelvin Meadow Campaign now has a regular meeting time.
Meet at the meadow every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 2pm (rain or 
shine!)
There will be a number of activities suitable for all ages and abilities to 
get involved in including:
Painting Litter-picking Digging Planting Creating signage
…or just come along and have a cuppa and some home-made cake, get to know your 
neighbours and find out what you can do to save this great piece of green space 
from development. We will provide all equipment including gardening gloves and 
litter pickers as well as delicious refreshments.

The Glasgow City Plan will be replaced in future by a Local Development Plan. 
This will set out the Council's land use strategy for the coming years and 
provide a basis for assessing planning applications.
The first key phase of public consultation is the Main Issues Report (MIR).
This is aimed at encouraging discussion on the main issues that the LDP is 
likely to address, as well as the Council's big ideas on where development 
should, and should not, take place - give your views on the issues at:

Gender and Asylum: Gendering the Asylum Process

The aim of this roundtable is to discuss the need to consider gender based
persecution as grounds for granting asylum. The outcome of this discussion 
will be used to highlight the importance of gendering
asylum policy.

The Banks, the Crisis and the Attack on Democracy
A talk by David Malone

Princes St., Edinburgh
David Malone, blogger and author of “The Debt Generation”, has been 
writing about this for several years. David will give a talk, hosted 
by Edinburgh Green Party and open to all and will give a perspective 
you don’t hear in the mainstream media.

Big Green Bike Ride 6-11 May 2012
We are linking up with Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern 
Ireland to raise funds through the Big Green Bike Ride from London to 
Edinburgh. You can also select to cycle part of the route.

Greener Leith are in the final short list for a grant of
up to £80,000 for the proposed Portobello and Leith Community Wind
Turbine project. If the project gets the green light it won't just
generate green energy, it will also generate a surplus of hundreds of
thousands of pounds over its lifetime, to support community projects in the 
Leith, Craigentinny and Portobello area.
