Bedroom tax has no place in our welfare state
However, very few one-bedroom council properties exist. The result for many may be debt, rent arrears or eviction from their homes.
Westminister's impact assessment was based only on London households. London's own needs should not dictate laws that impact the Glasgow and West of Scotland, particularly as Scottish councils already have very different laws on issues such as eviction of tenants.
Welfare measures should protect the most disadvantaged in our communities, rather than penalizing them. Under proposed measures such as the Citizens' Income, every individual would have an unconditional right to a basic level of income, replacing the current problematic tax and benefits system.
