Green Councillors are leading efforts to ensure Glasgow is a City fit for Cycling.
At the full council meeting on 16th February 2012, Green Councillors put forward a motion in support of the Cities for Cycling Campaign. The Council
was asked to develop its action for cycling to take account of the measures highlighted in the Cities Fit for Cycling campaign's manifesto, and this was agreed unanimously.
During the debate, Green Councillors highlighted particular concerns about the fact that lorries account for 5% of road traffic accidents but 16% of cycling deaths. The Campaign demands that lorries entering a city centre are required by law to fit appropriate sensors, alarms, and mirrors to support better driving and fewer accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians.
Green Councillor for Hillhead, Martha Wardrop said, "Council must support demands that lorries entering the city centre are required by law to fit appropriate sensors, alarms, and mirrors to help prevent fatalities to cyclists and pedestrians. The Council's road safety campaigns should include awareness raising activities targetting lorry drivers. The members of the Considerate Contractor Scheme should emphasise protecting the safety of cyclists, pedestrians, and road users when their vehicles are driving to or from building sites."
