Glasgow Greens pick local campaigner for Glasgow South
The campaign will launch on Saturday 27th March at 11am, with an event at Queens Park railway station (2) designed to illustrate the way in which Glasgow's transport needs have not been met by successive governments.
The Greens will campaign hard on this issue during the election to highlight the misdirection of funds towards polluting and expensive projects and away from community-centred and environmentally sound solutions.
Marie Campbell said:
"The lopsided nature of the UK and Scottish Government's transport spending priorities are something that is clearly visible to Glasgow South residents, who need only look to the M74 works looming over their neighborhoods for evidence. In the meantime, many Southsiders have a hard time accessing public transport facilities, with few of the rail stations offering disabled access and many being hard to access for the elderly or for those with prams and bikes.
"If money was diverted away from projects like the M74 extension, airport expansion and the proposed second Forth Road Bridge, we could afford to offer better access to public transport. This would improve local residents' quality of life and save money, while also being a greener solution to our transport needs."
Patrick Harvie MSP said:
"Having Greens elected to the Scottish Parliament over the last ten years has helped deliver real change on the environment and social justice, although there's obviously much more still to do. Westminster is crying out for a Green voice, and the people of Glasgow South can be the first to deliver that historic breakthrough.
"Whatever the outcome, though, we're in this campaign to talk about issues the other parties ignore. We're the only party to put public transport in Glasgow ahead of new motorways, and the only party to understand that Glasgow's economic problems can't be fixed by refloating the same economic model which has now so clearly failed. I look forward to supporting Marie's campaign on the doorsteps of Glasgow South."
Notes:
1. Marie lives in Mount Florida in Glasgow's South Side. She presently works in Patrick Harvie MSP’s Glasgow office on local campaigns, in particular supporting community groups to preserve precious green spaces. She’s passionate about life, people and the potential for a greener, more just, more equitable world.
2. Queens Park station lies just outside the border of the Glasgow South constituency. However it is well used by Glasgow South residents, and along with other stations that are within the constituency including Crosshill, Langside and Pollokshaws East, has no wheelchair access.
