Green Councillors seek reassurance of continuity of care for residents

- Cllr Martha Wardrop (Hillhead)
The announcement of the care group Southern Cross closing down and transferring its care homes to its landlords has not resolved the serious concerns of vulnerable residents and their families.
Green Councillors believe that it is vital that everyone who is involved in the arrangements to transfer Southern Cross homes to another landlord prioritises the needs of residents, acknowledging their right to dignity and respect during this difficult situation.
Cllr Martha Wardrop said, "Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government has responsibility for ensuring a continuity of care for the residents of Southern Cross. There has to be a guarantee that no homes can close and no resident will be turned out or forced to move against their wishes.
Cllr Wardrop added, "Clearly, reasons for this crisis need to be explored and as a result, the implications for future provision of private sector residential care should be identified. Commitment is needed from Government to take account of evidence from a GMB study indicating that over half the proposed landlords for the care homes operate from tax havens. The Government has to intervene to sustain care homes but also to prevent another crisis emerging further down the line. There has to be action to curtail excessive private profiteering by landlords at the expense of the most vulnerable people in our communities."
