Greens Call for Anti-Slavery Day Event

The five Greens on Glasgow City Council have called for the city to mark national Antislavery Day. This commemoration day falls on 18th October, having been established by a Private Members Bill which passed through parliament just before the general election.

Accepting SNP and Labour amendments to her motion, at a recent Full Council Meeting, Bailie Dr Nina Baker, councillor for Anderston/City ward, said "We are keen for the city to mark National Anti-slavery Day in future. I was happy to accept the SNP's suggestions that this also include additional work on protecting trafficked children, and that we have a suitable piece of artwork from the city's collections put up in the City Chambers to remind us of our duties of vigilance against the evils of slavery and trafficking today."

The bill was proposed by former MP Anthony Steen and passed through all its parliamentary stages without needing a vote. The date has been set at 18th October, which usually falls within Black History Month
